Maryland Eyes Wide Open
ongoing
Baltimore Maryland
The Baltimore American Friends Service Committee office has assembled an exhibit Maryland Eyes Wide Open which details the Human Cost of the Iraq War and reflects the costs of war to the state of Maryland. The exhibit consists of at least 40 pairs of combat boots, representing the US military deaths from Maryland; civilian shoes, tagged with names and ages of a very small fraction of the tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis who have died; a representative pair of combat boots and 7 red poppies, representing the estimated number of wounded US military personnel (approximately 7 times the number of dead); and signs and literature detailing the human and financial costs of the war on the cities and counties of Maryland. AFSC will help with logistics and contribute to your planning for auxiliary events or activities presented in conjunction with the exhibit. For information on obtaining and displaying the exhibit, call 410-323-4200, extensions 20 or 21 or e-mail at tsteele@afsc.org or ggillespie@afsc.org. Mayor Adrian Fenty has turned his back on low and moderate income District residents. Like Anthony Williams, Adrian Fenty has consistently prioritized the profits of wealthy developers over the needs of District residents. ADRIAN FENTY! The Best Mayor $$$ can buy! Fenty is holding a joint fundraiser with Newark Mayor Cory Booker to add to his already collected $2 million for his 2010 campaign: -$891,612 of the $2 million came from real estate and construction industry -$14000 from Roadside Development -- which Mayor Fenty tried to force on the Tenley community -$12000 from Blue Skye Development -$3000 from PN Hoffman -- recipient of 16 acres of public property on the SW Waterfront for $1 per year for 99 years -$21450 Clark Construction -- previously selected as the developer for publicly-owned Poplar Point -$5100 from Donatelli and Klein – soon to be recipient of properties on Georgia Avenue NW for $1 (assessed value over $1 million) -$2000 from Abdo - “We would be very interested in looking at what's available [referring to closed DCPS schools]”* -- CEO Jim Abdo --former Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Eric Price is now Abdo Vice President -most common donation amount is $2000** (who can afford this?) Adrian Fenty: -is trying to sell 11 of the 23 public schools that closed in 2008, at his direction, to developers, who have donated heavily to his 2010 campaign (below), ignoring community input given on alternative public uses for the sites, and despite pledging that, “We will keep all the schools within the inventory of the D.C. Government. We don't intend to sell any of them.”*** -attempted to push a “public-private partnership” for the Tenley Library and Janney School, against the wishes of the affected ANC and community. His plan would mean the loss of valuable green space to an already overcrowded elementary school, a continued delay in the reopening of the Tenley Library, and condominiums stacked on top of a library (preventing future expansion of the library, if necessary). -closed the Franklin Shelter, without an adequate replacement. 3/21 March on the Pentagon
March 21
DC
We will march on Saturday, March 21, the sixth anniversary of the start of the Iraq invasion, to demand that taxpayer dollars be used to meet people's needs--here and everywhere. This year's real Pentagon war budget will top $1 trillion. This amount could create 10 million jobs, provide healthcare and education for all, rebuild New Orleans, and repair much of the damage done in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. We need money for jobs, housing, health care and education, not for wars of aggression. The occupation of Iraq alone costs $12 billion each month. This amounts to $400 million each day, $16.7 million per hour and $278,000 per minute. >From Iraq to Afghanistan to Palestine Occupation is a Crime. We Need Jobs and Education. Not Wars and Occupation. Please visit www.PentagonMarch.org for details. Thank you. www.PentagonMarch.org
4/24 Protest the spring IMF/World Bank meetings!
April 24-26, 2009
As the economic crisis deepens and US foreclosure and unemployment rates climb, wealthy bankers and finance ministers from around the world scramble to resuscitate the financial institutions which created the crisis in the first place. This April the global elite, global financial institutions, and wealthy governments will meet to plan out billions of dollars worth of new economic bailouts for themselves while the nation's poor, the poor of the world, and working people are left with only crumbs. Billions of dollars have already been handed over to CEOs and portfolio managers, while workers' benefits and wages get slashed simultaneously. This trend will continue so long as capitalist expansion is prioritized over democratic principles, as long as profit is more important than people. A better world is possible, a world in which our means of providing for ourselves is not controlled by a wealthy elite. A global order is possible in which the dignity of human life is placed above greed, and the living earth is shared and respected, rather than commodified and sold. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank are two institutions which enforce the hyper-capitalist status quo. Since 1980, these institutions have been forcing countries to adopt neoliberal structural adjustment policies of privatization, liberalization and budget cuts. These policies are directly to blame for much of the suffering in the current financial crisis and in its predecessors in Argentina, East Asia, Russia and elsewhere. Though the IMF itself is beginning to admit its mistakes – it recently recommended that countries abandon market fundamentalist policies to directly intervene in their economies – it's understood that that advice only applies to the United States and European countries. Free markets for the poor and socialism for the rich is their mantra. Neoliberal economics widens the sphere of imperialist capitalism, props up schemes of privatization, market liberalization and deregulation, and is ultimately to blame for this crisis. The World Bank and IMF are preeminent supranational institutions working to preserve the global financial order that puts profits, private gain, militarism, and gentrification over the needs of the people. Through their Structural Adjustment Programs - what they now refer to as"Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers" – these institutions have been destroying economies, local and global, for far too long. They must be stopped. The World Bank and IMF will be holding their annual joint spring meetings April 24-26 in Washington DC. As they try to save themselves from global financial meltdown (or maybe just give themselves a few extra billion dollars) we all know better than to let them have all the fun without us. Join Global Justice Action to oppose these institutions, resist the dominant global order, and show that a better world is possible, free from neoliberalism, capitalism, and imperialism.
4/4 March with UFPJ on Saturday, April 4th New York City
4/4/09
New York City
March with UFPJ on Saturday, April 4th New York City It is Time to End the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan It is Time to Address the Economic Crisis by Cutting Military Spending On April 4, 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his historic speech against the war in Vietnam at NYC's Riverside Church. One year later, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis while there to support striking sanitation workers. Dr. King's work linked the most pressing issues of his day; his life was about taking public action in the service of the struggles for equality, freedom, justice, and peace. Today, people from every walk of life and every corner of this country are both filled with the possibilities of hope and change and struggling under the worst financial crisis of this generation. This year, on Saturday, April 4, we call on all people to take up Dr. King's example of public action and join us in the streets of New York City's financial center as we renew our common commitment to move this country in a new direction. We will march on April 4 because the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan must be ended now! We will march on April 4 because a critical piece of addressing the economic crisis must be cutting military spending, starting with ending the flow of our tax dollars into these wars and occupations. We will march on April 4 because 'Beyond War, A New Economy Is Possible!' We will march on April 4 filled with hope. Now is the time that our movements for racial justice and economic equality; our movements against the wars and occupations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and elsewhere; our movements for a new economy based on people's needs, green union jobs and sustainability will ALL come together to say YES WE CAN! Yes We Can move beyond war! Yes We Can build a new world of justice, equality and peace! Today, we ask you to join United for Peace and Justice as we prepare for this timely mobilization. Scores of organizations have already endorsed our call, and, in the coming weeks, many more will be signing on. Click here to read the full call for our April 4 mobilization. Here's how you can help: * Share this message far and wide, help get the word out that we are marching for peace and justice on April 4 in New York City. * Make your plans now to join us in New York City on Saturday, April 4. In the coming days, we will have logistical details posted on the UFPJ website so be sure to look for that information. * If you are part of a group that wants to add your name to growing list of endorsing organizations, please click here. * Make the largest financial donation you can to help ensure the success of this mobilization! Over the past six years, we have counted on people like you to provide the money needed to organize our national mobilizations. Each time, you came through -- and now we hope we can count on you once again! www.unitedforpeace.org

3/20 William (Doubting) Thomas Commemoration
Noon, Friday March 20, 2009
Lafayette (Peace) Park
William (Doubting) Thomas Commemoration and Anti-Nuclear Peace Demonstration Lafayette (Peace) Park, in front of the White House Beginning Ceremony Noon, Friday March 20, 2009 (Thomas' 62nd Birthday) Concluding Ceremony 2 pm, Sunday, March 22, 2009 This Commemoration and Demonstration will celebrate the life, dedication and ideals of William Thomas, who sat down in front of the White House in 1981 with a sign reading"WANTED: WISDOM AND HONESTY," and started an anti-nuclear peace vigil that has lasted for nearly 28 years. Our stage will feature peace speakers and singers, drummers and dancers, ranters and ravers, truthtellers and soothsayers, hippies and yuppies, rockers and rollers, and a general cross-section of the kinds of people who appreciated and sometimes joined Thomas in his lifelong quest for wisdom and honesty, intelligent government, and peace. Ellen Thomas -- his wife and companion since 1984 -- has asked friends and well-wishers to come and bring remembrances to share -- the microphone will be open to all. We will videotape the proceedings, to create an enduring testimonial to a life of courage, conviction, and peaceful persistence. Songs, poems, photos, artworks, plays, all acts of memory are welcome. We will inaugurate the space at noon on Friday with drums, dedications, invocations and libations from Native American and African peoples. From 1 to 4 pm on Friday there will be speeches, drums and other music. From 4 to 6, we invite short testimonials, memories and other speakers. From 6 to 8: Music (Thomas-palooza 2009). After the program people will remain on watch with the signs that Thomas helped create, and keep the vigil going through Friday night, Saturday, and Saturday night. People are invited to join in readings from Thomas' book about his travels,"Life, Liberty and the Hot Pursuit" (also available online at the website: http://www.prop1.org). All proceedings will be webcast, hopefully live from Lafayette Park. Festivities will re-ignite on Sunday at 11am, and continue through a closing benediction at 2pm. To schedule a speaking time in advance, or if you know (or are) a group whose musical contributions would be appreciated, please call 202/682-4282 to make specific arrangements. Thomas' vision and dedication continue daily through the 24/7 vigil in Lafayette Park in front of the White House, now maintained by Concepcion Picciotto and other dedicated volunteers from the Peace House, including Start Loving, Steve Mobray, and Tantara. Those who appreciate Thomas' work and purpose are asked to contribute to the vigil by joining for an hour, 2 hours, 4 hours or overnight (6-8 hours), to give opportunity for other vigilers to rest and rejuvenate. If you have never thought about spending time at the vigil, you should try it. Please call 202/682-4282 to coordinate an anti-nuclear peace vigil shift. http://www.prop1.org

3/22 Urban Solar Solutions
March 22
4641 Tanglewood Drive, Edmonston, MD 20781
I recently went to a Going Solar workshop at Urban Solar Solutions (next to Community Forklift). There were two experts talking, both extremely knowledgeable (as well as Ellen, who runs the store and program and is also a great resource), and the two-hour workshop ran to three hours and then some. The workshop cost $30 but was worth every minute. Bring questions. The next one, this Sunday afternoon, is on green roofs, and then March 22 will be the one on Green Money for Homeowners (there are currently terrific grants and other incentives for going solar at home). 3/20 Memorial for Thomas
Noon on March 20th
Lafayette Park
William ("Doubting") Thomas, born March 20, 1947, vigiled outside the White House since June 3, 1981 for Wisdom, Honesty, Truth, Justice and Global Nuclear Disarmament. He died January 24, 2009 after a long illness and a year-long government stay-away order from Lafayette Park. Concepcion Picciotto, his 27-year vigiling partner, needs friendship and help. There will be a special memorial for Thomas in Lafayette Park at noon on March 20th, Thomas's 62nd birthday. We hope you can come. I need your help in spreading the word. Please send me emails with your favorite anecdotes about Thomas. Thomas was very ill for the past two years, and I believe he is glad to be at peace now. http://prop1.org/thomas.htm
3/14 Break the Bank
3/14/09 7PM-10PM
Potter's House, Columbia and 17th St. NW
Global Justice Action needs your help!!! The IMF/World Bank will be rolling through DC on 4/24-4/26. They are a well-funded organization; funds procured through the exploitation of"developing" countries. Global Justice Action (GJA) exploits no one and, actually, is attempting to halt the venal practices of IMF/World Bank. Alas, because of the ethical dedication, GJA has limited monetary resources. But GJA asks you to voluntary donate what funds you may have to proliferate the cause of Justice. Unlike World Bank, GJA will not obtain funds through coercion. And instead hoarding the funds without any reciprocation, GJA will provide top-shelf entertainment for the evening; The Hendersons will dance and sing As Mr. Kite flies through the ring don't be late Messrs. K and H. assure the public Their production will be second to none And of course Henry The Horse dances the waltz! The band begins at ten to six; singing, dancing, laughter; a splendid time is guaranteed for all. Ten dollar donation suggested but not required. 202-234-2000
3/14 Rally & March Against Maryland's Death Penalty
Saturday, March 14th @ 1 PM
Outside MD's death row -- 401 E. Madison Ave, Baltimore
Rally & March Against Maryland's Death Penalty When: Saturday, March 14th @ 1 PM Where: Outside MD's death row -- 401 E. Madison Ave, Baltimore Just three months ago, the Maryland Commission on Capital Punishment found that the state’s death penalty is racially biased, arbitrarily applied, wasteful, and posed a risk of killing innocent people -- all without deterring crime or aiding victims. They recommended immediate abolition of the death penalty and Governor Martin O'Malley agreed! When the Governor and 15 Senators introduced a bill to repeal Maryland's death penalty, a handful of pro-death penalty Senators maneuvered to water-down the bill and block debate on the issue -- rather than allow an open discussion & vote. This is both an outrage and a tragedy! Five men remain on MD's discredited & barbarous death row. Will they be executed without even getting a real hearing, so a handful of politicians can claim they are"tough on crime?" Will Maryland resume killing prisoners using a system shown to be rife with bias and disparity? We say NO! As the House of Delegates plans to hear the Governor's anti-death penalty bill on March 17, we call on them to reject the Senate’s shameful compromise and vote for complete repeal of the death penalty. In an era of change, there is no reason to maintain this relic of the barbaric past. At a time of economic uncertainty, we need HELP from Annapolis -- not executions. YES WE CAN – abolish the death penalty and fight the criminal (in)justice system! Join us as we march this Saturday, March 14th @ 1 PM outside MD's death house to shut down the killing machine! No more executions in Maryland! NO to the divisive, dead end-logic of"tough on crime!" We demand jobs & education, not prisons & executions! Sponsored by the Baltimore Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty & the Campaign to End the Death Penalty. Endorsers list in formation. mikestark2003@yahoo.com (Silver Spring) or awbenn@gmail.com (Baltimore)

3/27 THE STRUGGLE TO VOTE: The Right to Political Self-Determination in the District and Beyond
Friday, March 27, 2009 9am – 5pm
UDC-David A. Clarke School of Law 4200 Connecticut Ave., NW Building 38, 2nd Floor Windows Room
THE STRUGGLE TO VOTE: The Right to Political Self-Determination in the District and Beyond Friday, March 27, 2009 9am – 5pm Morning Reception will begin at 9am, followed by the International Panel at 10am. Afternoon Lunch Reception begins at 12:30pm, followed by the D.C. Panel at 2pm. An Evening Reception will follow the Afternoon Panel. Speakers to include: Wade Henderson, President and CEO, Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Walter Smith, Executive Director, D.C. Appleseed Center Johnny Barnes, Executive Director, ACLU, National Capital Area Ilir Zherka, Executive Director, D.C. Vote Timothy Cooper, Executive Director, Worldrights Prof. Seigfried Wiessner, St. Thomas University School of Law An individual’s right to vote has long been regarded as “an inherent dignity of the human person.” Yet, in countries all across the globe, some citizens are denied the right to express themselves politically. In the District of Columbia, citizens have the right to vote for the President of the United States. We, however, lack a representative with voting power in either the Senate or the House of Representatives; and our own elected legislature is subject to the whims of congress. President Obama named the District of Columbia a priority during his administration and is likely to sign the D.C. Voting Rights Act of 2009. But, will this Bill give the citizens of the District the same political voice as the citizens of the “several states”? What is the most effective method of enfranchising these citizens? How have other disenfranchised peoples around the world fought for their voice and how can these struggles inform our local debate? Our symposium will examine these questions in two contexts: first, the right to vote abroad, and what initiatives were used to obtain that right; and, second, our focus will shift to the District and the specific challenges presented to obtain the right to vote in D.C. UDC-David A. Clarke School of Law 4200 Connecticut Ave., NW Building 38, 2nd Floor Windows Room Red Line Metro at Van Ness/UDC Info and RSVP: Julie Akemann (202) 274-7362, julie.akemann@gmail.com

Adrian Fenty: -is trying to sell 11 of the 23 public schools that closed in 2008, at his direction, to developers, who have donated heavily to his 2010 campaign (below), ignoring community input given on alternative public uses for the sites, and despite pledging that, “We will keep all the schools within the inventory of the D.C. TRANSES - Friday, March 20, 9 PM Ahmed El Maanouni’s 1981 documentary records concerts, interviews and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the pioneering group Nass El Ghiwane, who have been famously described by Martin Scorsese as “the Rolling Stones of North Africa.” Nass El Ghiwane emerged from the impoverished city limits of Casablanca, combining elements of traditional Moroccan music—Sufi chants, Berber rhythms and the mystical dances of the Gnawa—to create a sound all their own, introducing a new generation of North Africans to their roots, and the rest of the world to a musical revolution. (Note courtesy of World Cinema Foundation) DIR/SCR Ahmed El Maanouni; PROD Izza Gennini. Morocco/France, 1981, color, 90 min. In Arabic with English subtitles. NOT RATED. TOUKI BOUKI - Saturday, March 21, 5:45 PM Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambéty’s 1973 feature debut has been described as a phantasmagoric mash-up of African oral tradition and European New Wave style, as well as one of the greatest African films of all time. A young cowherd, Mory, leaves the countryside for the city of Dakar, where he rides around town on a motorcycle adorned with a cow’s skull. Along with his girlfriend, Anta, he dreams of leaving Dakar for Paris, and the two fall into a series of petty crimes and cons to raise the money. Full of flashbacks, flashforwards, dream sequences and comedic daring, TOUKI BOUKI is a landmark film, and the sparkling new 35mm print was restored by the World Cinema Foundation. DIR/SCR/PROD Djibril Diop Mambéty. Senegal, 1973, color, 85 min. In Wolof, Arabic, and French with English subtitles. NOT RATED. SHOOT THE MESSENGER - Saturday, March 21, 7:45 PM A bold, funny and controversial film directed by the politically explosive Nigerian-Brit filmmaker Ngozi Onwurah. The film’s opening line, “...everything bad that has ever happened to me has involved a black person,” rouses and prepares us for a critically insightful and intellectually charged confrontation of ideological and cultural perspectives that is candidly rendered in this remarkably thought-provoking film. (Note courtesy of AFI 20/20) DIR Ngozi Onwurah; SCR Sharon Foster; PROD Anne Pivcevic. UK, 2006, color, 90 min. NOT RATED. WRESTLING GROUNDS (L’Appel des Arènes) - Saturday, March 21, 10 PM Shamans and punching bags are the cornerstones of 17-year-old Nalla’s training in this colorful foray into the world of Senegalese wrestling, a traditional art that has become a national phenomenon. When Nalla joins a champion team, he learns there’s a spiritual aspect to the sport, one that goes beyond the muscles, money and the ladies. Cheikh Ndiaye’s engaging film twists the familiar images of Africa, cutting from nightclubs to ancestral ceremonies to streets where boom- boxes play and athletes in traditional dress and sneakers dance their way to victory. Hilton Alexandria Mark Center, Alexandria, VA · Room Magnolia C
You are invited to a workshop on NEXT STEPS IN ENDING U.S.-SPONSORED TORTURE At the ECUMENICAL ADVOCACY DAYS Saturday March 14, 2009, 4:30---6:00pm Hilton Alexandria Mark Center, Alexandria, VA · Room Magnolia C Panelists for the workshop include: . Matthew Alexander, former U.S. military interrogator and author of How to Break a Terrorist: The U.S. Interrogators Who Used Brains, Not Brutality, to Take Down the Deadliest Man in Iraq . Scott Horton, New York attorney known for his work in human rights law, legal affairs and national security contributor at Harper's Magazine, and adjunct professor at Columbia Law School . George Hunsinger, Founder of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture and Professor of Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary We are all pleased that the President issued an executive order halting torture. Yet there are still many tasks ahead for the religious community as we work to end U.S.-sponsored torture, including advocating for an independent nonpartisan commission to investigate our torture policies and practices since Sept. 11, 2001. We also need to codify into law the various elements of the president's executive order including ending the CIA abuse of detainees, closing U.S. secret prisons, ending rendition for torture, and providing the International Committee of the Red Cross with access to U.S.-held detainees. Now is also the time to grow the moral consensus that torture is always wrong.
