The SGI-USA is an American Buddhist association that promotes peace and individual self-development based on the Mahayana tradition. Practitioners draw on the principles of the Lotus Sutra, particularly the respect for the inherent potential of each individual, recognition of the importance of making good causes in daily life, and an emphasis on interconnectedness. These principles inform the socially engaged Buddhism of SGI members. The SGI members in the D.C. Region reflect a cross-section of the larger community in the District of Columbia and surrounding jurisdictions.
