Ralph Nader founded the DC Library Renaissance Project in 2002 to protect and promote the public interest in the District's Public Library system, and specifically to raise awareness of the decline of the Library due to decades of budget cuts. As a result of efforts led by LRP, $220 million dollars was allocated by the DC Council to "transform" the library system. In recent years, 12 of the system's 24 neighborhood libraries have been renovated or entirely rebuilt. Critical repairs to other branches and the Martin Luther King Jr., Memorial central library have also been made, and maintenance is now ongoing instead of deferred.
The District Library Dynamos is a network of community driven oversight groups that seeks to involve residents in library advocacy.
