In 2001, the Socialist Party of the United States (SP or SP-USA) celebrated its 100th anniversary. Founded in 1901, the party has always had equality - political, social and economic. This means one person one vote for all regardless of sex, race, etc. The party is electoral by definition and is dedicated to creating a third party of socialist practices and policies if not name, and its members often support other third party campaigns like the Green, Statehood, Peoples and Peace and Freedom. The SP emphasizes economic issues such as equal pay for equal work for women and minorities. Workplace democracy is also a strong point. Socialists prefer the more progressive and radical unions, especially the IWW - the Industrial Workers of the World. The high point of the party was reached in 1912 when Eugene Debs received 6% of the vote and the party had 1,049 elected officials including the mayors of 56 cities. In the last 15 years the ASP has gone from about 450 members to over 1,200.
