25 families at 220 Hamilton St NW have lived with substandard housing conditions for decades. They now fear that their situation will become much worse. On March 2nd, 220 Hamilton was purchased in a bankruptcy sale by a Ms. Vivienne Awasum, a property manager with a troubled history of letting historic properties fall into decay until the point of demolition. Even more troubling is that the LLC through which Awasum purchased the building is believed to be linked to notorious slumlord Sanford Capital, which is under investigation by the city for neglecting tenants’ safety and health.

The tenants have less than 30 days before the building is officially sold. Through no fault of their own, they have been stripped of TOPA rights which are supposed to allow them to decide who can buy their building. Despite this disrespect of tenants’ rights, tenants aren’t backing down and they need YOUR support! Join them as they say NO to slumlords and call on DC officials to stand up for tenants’ rights.
