SURJ DC is a local chapter of Showing up for Racial Justice - a national network of white people organizing to stand up for racial justice and combat white supremacy.
Our Resilience Events are monthly gatherings that allow white-identified people to caucus with one another and build emotional capacity for engagement, activism, and resilience.
THEME FOR MAY: POWER
Power - between individuals, communities and institutions - exists. Exploring what accountable, non-coercive power and leadership looks like is a process. Come talk about collective stake in transforming power in the service of work towards dismantling white supremacy and building collective liberation.
WHY HAVE THESE GATHERINGS?
After the police murders in early July, 2016, one of SURJ's partner organizations (BLM DMV) suggested that SURJ DC provide spaces to “build a culture of emotional processing” for white folks. White folks are experiencing intense emotions: empathetic grief with people of color in our communities, guilt about the hypocrisy of white privilege, rage at our own people, fear of our collective future, and much more.
