Leonard Peltier and the fight for his freedom

Thursday, July 23rd, 7:00 PM

Location: Sankofa Books, 2714 Georgia Ave. NW; Washington DC, Columbia Heights Metro

Leonard Peltier finally has a chance for justice. Peltier is one of America's longest-serving political prisoners having spent almost 34 years of his life behind bars for a crime he didn't commit. He was an active member of the American Indian Movement in the 1970s and was framed for the murder of two FBI agents on the Lakota Sioux Pine Ridge reservation in June 1976. While imprisoned currently at the US Penitentiary in Lewisburg, PA, Leonard continues to face injustice -having been routinely mistreated and denied necessary medical treatment.

On July 28, Peltier will have his first full parole hearing in 15 years. His supporters are mobilizing a campaign of letter-writing, petitioning and actions in an effort to free him. There is a new opportunity to re-energize the countless numbers of people who have fought alongside Peltier for the past 30+ years and to finally win his release. Please come to this meeting to learn about the latest happenings in the Peltier case, as well as the inspiring history of Native American resistance in this country and the brutal way the US government has attempted to stomp it out of existence.
