STATE OF OUR UNION

Hey D.C.,

On Wednesday January 27, 2010, President Barack Obama will make his first State of the Union address.  Many progressives anticipate a continuation of Afghanistan plan Obama unraveled at his last address to the nation, and consequently are taking action.  Additionally, there is also anxiety around the recommended strategy in Haiti that promises more military occupation than reconstruction assistance.

Many from all over the country will be demonstrating on January 27.  Many more will be at home watching with crossed fingers and disbelief at what is about to unfold. We hope part of your activities include taking action by writing President Obama and Congress (see Take Action column), attending the many the events listed below and supporting progressive organizationsfor Haiti relief.

State of the Union Preview: Obama Pitches Some (Good and Bad) Clintonism
Posted January 25, 2009 on www.alternet.org

If reports are accurate, we're going to see the best and the worst of Clintonian governance during the State of the Union speech.

First, a bone to those Blue Dogs - who have been just swell this whole year - and an attempt, perhaps, to take some of the sting out of those oh-so-accurate charges of socialist perfidy emanating from Wingnuttistan:

President Obama will call for a three-year freeze in spending on many domestic programs, and for increases no greater than inflation after that, an initiative intended to signal his seriousness about cutting the budget deficit, administration officials said Monday.

Actually, it'd basically be a freeze on transportation spending and a few other totally unnecessary programs (yes, that's sarcasm) - air-traffic control, education, etc.
