CHILDREN's program GALA will spotlight community mainstays

Incomparable Children's Program Hoists Likewise Incomparable Pillars of the Community While Advancing Impressive Capital Campaign

What: The Gala is one of many creative efforts by M.O.M.I.E's to bolster its organization and increase visibility in a faltering economy. M.O.M.I.E's TLC, Mentors of Minorities in Education's Total Learning Cis-Tem is a DC-based nonprofit organization that "nurtures the genius" of children by creating uniquely transformative educational experiences. Following the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, the theme for this year's Gala is, Rise Up! A Journey for Economic Empowerment Worldwide, celebrating those who pushed against the odds to attain financial sustainability.
M.O.M.I.E's has pushed against the odds by aggressively building its capital campaign for an "eco-green" million dollar children's center, which scored a recent victory by receiving a $100,000 grant from the Cafritz foundation. The grant put the program at $700,000 of its $1.4 million goal estimated for building renovations. This year's family fun event will include the Children's Gallery of Black History, featuring hands-on learning exhibits that explore the life and achievements of visionary minority leaders who have struggled to achieve seemingly impossible feats. We will pay tribute to 8 momentous men and women including Carter G. Woodson, Nina Simone, and A. Philip Randolph and in honor of the aforementioned will award under-recognized local community change makers: Vivan Buckingham of CERES (pronounced "series"), Jonathan Stith with Youth Education Alliance, and Antoine Williams of DC Dynasty Baseball.
