Hey D.C.,

In a sobering report issued on Monday February 22nd announced that since the Taliban's fall in 2001, the death toll of US soldiers in Afghanistan has now reached 1,000. Combined with the rising number of civilian casualties in Afghanistan that has reached 27 in the past week alone and the total body count in Iraq sine 2003 that is close to 100,000 civilian, non-combatants, these numbers are staggering.

Much of the legacy of celebrating black history month is a history shaped by a consistent quest for freedom, justice and peace.  Despite, domestic contradictions that show that since 2001 police brutality rates have claimed the lives of over 100,000 citizens (majority young, black men) and disproportionately high prison rates, blacks remain a largely progressive segment of society.  A survey conducted at the start of the Iraq war in 2003 reported that only 44% of African Americans supported the invasion - as compared to the 67% of Latinos and 73% of Caucasians that did the same.

The best way to celebrate black history to take action against the war in Afghanistan and the greater imperialist agenda that insists on an oppressive US military presence everywhere in the world. We also hope that read this week's article on new efforts to militarize Haiti and continue supporting progressive organizations for Haiti relief...may we never forget her struggles.

Featured Article: More Pain for Devastated Haiti: Under the Pretense of Disaster Relief, U.S. Running a Military Occupation
Posted February 12, 2010 on www.blackagendareport.com

The rapid mobilization of U.S troops in Haiti was not primarily done for humanitarian reasons; we're likely to see a neoliberal economic plan imposed, at gunpoint if necessary. citizens.

Official denials aside, the United States has embarked on a new military occupation of Haiti thinly cloaked as disaster relief. While both the Pentagon and the United Nations claimed more troops were needed to provide "security and stability" to bring in aid, according to nearly all independent observers in the field, violence was never an issue. in

Instead, there appears to be cruder motives for the military response. With Haiti's government "all but invisible" and its repressive security forces collapsed, popular organizations were starting to fill the void. But the Western powers rushing in envision sweatshops and tourism as the foundation of a rebuilt Haiti. This is opposed by the popular organizations, which draw their strength from Haiti's overwhelmingly poor majority. Thus, if a neoliberal plan is going to be imposed on a devastated Haiti it will be done at gunpoint.
