Metropolitan Washington Public Health Association Annual Conference
Location: Kaiser Family Foundation Barbara Jordan Center, 1330 G Street, NW, Washington, DC, 20005 (Metro Center)
Do you sometimes feel like nothing is changing? We get reports in our email and we read headlines that disease rates are high, poverty levels haven't changed and Health People 2010 is here but how well did we do in with 2000? The 2010 MWPHA Meeting "The Future of Public Health Leadership: Where Passion Meets Action" attempts to take a step back from the details of our specific issues and talk about what it takes to lead change. We are going to break away from our issue specific silos and talk about reviving the public health community.
MWPHA is interested in creating leaders. We want your voices being heard all over the region. We want to see you writing op-eds, testifying in front of committees, visiting your legislators, holding court in on-line discussions and starting your own businesses. We also want to see you inspiring the next generation of public health leaders. We are not content to see our members go to work day to day and churn out the next deliverable. We want you to continue to let your passion shine while demanding change.
The conference objectives include:
* Participants will have a better understanding of the role public health has historically played in shaping positive social change
* Participants identify the challenges currently faced by the public health community in becoming effective change agents in today's social and political movements
* Participants from all sectors leave the meeting with a set of skills and strategies they can use to be more effective public health leaders
* The presentations and interactions among participants produce information that can be used by MWPHA to create resources to promote leadership development
* The meeting serves to maintain and strengthen networks of local public health leaders
